Hi guys
Looking to set up a 5g freshwater tank for some fishy fun with our 2year old. We have no prior experience so would welcome suggestions on anything and everything as far a the hardware and fish selection.
Space is limited so 5g is the max.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to AA!! We are glad to have you!

Any idea at all what you would like? Are you thinking about live plants, or fake plants? Fish selection is pretty limited for a 5 gal tank, but there are options. Bettas and microrasboras are the best choices. FW Shrimp are also very cool, can be very colorful, and are great for a small 5 gal tank.

The other thing to consider: The smaller the tank, the harder it actually is to maintain... so get the largest tank you can fit, and you can afford. If it is 5 gal, that is fine, but be prepared for more frequent water changes and top offs. If you click on the image in my signature, there are a couple of photo albums of my 5 gal tanks. It could give you some ideas.
