Welcome to AA! Good luck with the tank. I believe you are going to need a heater and mollys and guppys can be kept together.

[QUOTE=DrConnie;1410346]Wow, this is cool Everyone is so nice and friendly.

@jcolon...I am definitely going to do fishless cycling- I'm all about doing it right & my goal is to keep the lil buggers alive. No disposable income here Speaking of $$...One article said you can use a chunk of raw fish to start the cycling process - it's looking like the most attractive option since I have a hunk of salmon in the freezer. Would you recommend this?

Not sure about salmon but I guess it work .. raw shrimp as well. Only worry about raw food is it may introduce other bacteria/ parasites you may not want.

Better yet If you have an ace hardware near you .. they sell a janitorial grade ammonia which some members have used to start the cycle. Just make sure it is just pure ammonia ... no surfactants / detergents etc.
The link below is a great guide to fishless cycling.

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Good luck!!

Thanks so much...I'm really excited about this!

I would like to know what fish to start with? Are Mollys and Guppies good choices for a newbie?

With the set up I purchased I received a device and have NO CLUE what it is! Its about 7 or 8 inches long - black wand looking thing with a light bulb on one end and a power cord on the other. The brand is Marineland and it says "Stealth Pro" 120V - 60 Hz 100 Watt HMA100 ML90450 on the side with 2 suction cups attached. WTH is it and what does it do???

Does it have a dial to adjust temp? It's probably a heater.

Yes, it goes from 70 - 86. It says minimum water level...don't know which end goes in the water? Or what temp to set it at?

The longer part from the minimum line goes in the water. The water temp depends on the fish that you have or you're getting.

The dial goes at the top and the water level needs to be at least as high as the minimum level mark

Marineland to stop selling some Stealth Pro Heaters, investigate quality issues

There is a list of affected heaters on there and says all retailers were asked to stop selling the affected models and Marineland stopped shipping them so you "should" be ok (according to this article at least)
