Hi I'm Waheed, have had cichlids a few years ago but just recently my daughter thought she was clever and got 2 mollies, however I got home from work only to find them in a vase. So I set her up with with a tank and all the rest plus extra fish. They now have me involved so I decided to set up a Malawi tank.[emoji3]

Don't know if I'm in the right thread or if I'm in elsewhere. New at this. But how would you know the difference. In mbuna and African I think I have them all mixed up in one tank

Here are pics of the tank and the species don't know which are mbuna or african

I am not sure I understand the question but mbuna are a subset of the cichlids which can be found in Lake Malawi in Africa. Most of the commonly available colorful cichlids referred to as "African Cichlids" come Lake Malawi including mbuna, peacocks, etc.

The other major Lake for the hobby in Africa is Tanganyika. Many Tanganyikan fish are also commonly available. Examples would include Tropheus, shell dwellers, julies, frontosa, comps, etc.

Lake Victoria is not very well known in the hobby but there are a lot of amazing cichlids that come from lake victoria as well such as many species of haps and other cool fish.

Of course, cichlids from west africa such as kribs have been in the hobby for many years.

TL;DR version - mbuna are a type african cichlid.
