Need help making salt tank!!

Hey guys and gals, I'm new to aquariums!! I have had a 20 gallon freshwater tank, and am now wanting to turn the empty tank into a salt aquarium... Any advice? I don't know what it takes to have a salt tank, or if it would even work for me to tank a salt tank that small...

Advice?

I also have seen the different types of tanks for salt. i.e. reef tanks, fish only, etc...
Can people explain the differences? Do you not put any fish in a reef tank or how does that work?

Thanks for the advice.

A fowlr means you have fish and live rock and no corals. With a reef you need special light. You also need to watch what fish you get because some eat corals.Although i think a 20gal would be too small for most fish.

If you could get fish you would only be able to get small fish because most fish require 55+ gallons. It depends on what you plan to do with your tank.

well I could potentially get a larger tank off of Craigslist for a pretty decent price... What about a 40g tank? Would that be big enough to house some decent fish?

Ive heart that having live rock is good for filtration also?

What about a sump? Is that necessary?

I'm brand spankin' new to the idea of a salt tank... I really dont know where to start. I also have a bit of a budget to work with so I cant afford those $850 kits...

Hoping for some advice on where to start =) Thanks!!!

Welcome to AA!

You should start reading the articles we have here and do some research. Then develop a plan and post that for comments or clarification if you are unsure of how something works.

A starting point would be:
New Tank Setup List

How to cycle your tank with out the use of fish

Oh, and
