Hi all. I'm Tina from the San Francisco East Bay Area of California.

I'm not new to fish tanks, but I am new to Planted tanks. I love learning new things. I'm on several forums and joined my local Aquatic Plant Society. Nice folks.

I wanted to show my clean and neat 10 and the current jungle mess. I will be trimming my stem plants esp. But I am using it as a holding tank this week.
I'm setting up my first rimless. It's approx. 10g as well. I got a bunch of new plants at my club's meet Sunday, plus some driftwood. So until the rimless is running my Shrimp live in a jungle this week.

Plus I'm seeking a deal on scissors and tweezers.

No CO2 on any of my tanks for now. I dose API Leaf Zone Weekly and am just now trying API CO2 liquid booster in my 5g

5g
Gravel only
Light: 1 10w CFL
Plants:
Amazon Swords
Umbrella plants (flowered, sent out runners, just now dying out). Not bad for a bog plant.
Anubias
Trying Ludwigia and some others but not sure if they will work

Fauna:
2 Cherry Barbs
2 Harlequin Rasboras
4 Neons
2 Otos
3 Nerites (Ruby, Zebra and Horned)
MTS lots.
Heavily stocked I know. But Barbs and Rasboras are going on 5 yrs old now.

10g
Black Flourite sand covered with Tahitian Moon Sand
Lights: 2 CFLs in the 6,500 range
Flora:
Chain Swords
Bacopa
Ludwigia
Java Moss
Taiwan Moss
Christmas Moss
Myriophyllum mattagrossense

Thank You, His body is a very light lavender and his fins under good light are sunshine yellow.

I used to live in Vallejo. Lived there twice over the years.

:) Thanks. I'm new to planted tanks. Only been doing live plants for about a year. I'm currently gathering stuff to set up my first rimless ~ 10g. It is a Sea Star. Curved front corners, flat back. Trying to find a CFL fixture or lamp that looks nice but doesn't cost &&&.

I'm doing all low tech right now. I do ferts, but not daily. I'm just thrilled my plants are alive. My fish and shrimps seem happy also.

well i hope i am as successful with the planted tanks... I have a 5G i am setting up and learning along the way... I am continuing to do my research and will get a 40G in the coming weeks.. I have decided I want live plants so I am killing myself with information overload.... I have to do my best to get it right... My 5G is coming along nicely but slowly.. I am learning the science of how to cycle a tank and why a tank must cycle.. like I said I am very new to aquariums.. :)

Plants will speed up your cycle usually :)
Just remember low light=no CO2 and less ferts. There are plenty of low to med light plants.

I'm growing mine with CFLs in the 6,500 k range. Just make sure to use FRESHWATER Plant lighting. Reef lights are very different.

I suggest The Planted Tank and Aquatic Plant Central forums. Lots of good info.

very good to know!!!! I have been looking at so many different lighting systems and plants. trying to figure out all the specs is tough when you know nothing... but I am learning... I will def check out the forums your recomending.. the more info the better.... I swear smoke is just pouring from my ears with all the info and research i have been doing!!!! :)

Approx 2-3 watts per gallon will grow low light plants. Most single florescent stock fixtures aren't enough light. So I got the cheaper incandescent hood ( $15 for 10g tank , top and filter at Petsmart) and added my 2 CFL plant bulbs.

And don't let the high tech snobs deter you if you aren't ready to go High light/CO2/massive ferts. I had people telling me I had to go CO2 to be successful. I'm very happy with the growth I get. **** , my Ludwigia has to be trimmed weekly !!!

Someday I may try High Tech but not yet. I'm low budget.

Low budget is good! family, kids, house yeah ............ if what you have is low budget.. It excites me more!!! thanks agian for the info.... my fish journal is going to be full in like two weeks and its 200 pages... the amount of knowledge I am getting is amazing!!! thank you thank you!!!

:welcome: to AA! :)

Love your tanks! I've always been interested in plants and have been investing into it.

You live in the Bay Area? I've been there! I went on a trolley once and it was so much fun! My parents used to live there way back when.

Heard of Half Moon Bay? I used to have some cousins there. It's a really nice area. :)

I've ridden horses on the beach in Half Moon Bay. Also had drinks at The Moonraker restaurant. I'm learning new things everyday about my tanks. Starting a new build this week. 10g rimless. :D
