I'm just getting started and I'm wondering...does the air pump really have to be above water level, like up on a shelf? I don't think I've ever seen that before but I did read it in the instructions and also in one of my books. What have your experiences been with that?

My air pumps are under my tank in the stand if that helps. Not high above the tank.

manufacturers recommend this in case of a power failure it guarantees there won't be a back syphon, just make sure you get a decent check valve for @ $1.29 an d go ahead and put it anywhere you like
