Absolutely, but you also don't need to replace them until they are falling apart. Just rinse/squeeze in used tank water and re-install. The recommendations from the manufacturers are tripe.

If the old ones are from an established tank, even better. Dont rinse them under the tap though. The tap has chlorine which will kill the good bacteria on the old filter. What i do is i swish the cartridge in the water i take out in my partial water changes.
And you can do this to make a new cartridge... Do It Yourself Whisper Filter Cartridge - YouTube

Yep, just rinse... like Nemo would say... just keep rinsing, just keep rinsing, just keep rinsing, rinsing, rinsing.... (yeah, I watched Finding Nemo with my 2 year old last night.... sigh).

FWIW, I rinse my filters out in the bath tub using regular old tap water. Hasn't caused me any problems. While it's best to rinse them in tank water, sometimes, that's a little more difficult considering the method of water changes.

The salt water you just took out in the pwc. Or fresh water...
Dont swish it around in the tank though because if you swish it in the tank your just putting what you took out just in the water the fish will be in.

It should last about 3 months and the carbon will last about a month. You can buy carbon at any local fish store (LFS). Buy the carbon without gravel in it.
