Aquaclear 110 modification

I have an Aquaclear 110 on a 55 gallon tank, currently housing a nice little Flowerhorn grow out. My question is, can I use a decent size piece of sponge over the intake, instead of the huge sponge in the filter? This would free up a lot of space for additional bio media.

You can and I do on all my HOB's . It keeps the internal filter material cleaner longer and keeps snails and fry out of the filter . As far as bio media is concerned , the sponge in the filter is as good as most anything you can put in . Just rinse in tank water when dirty and flow slows . Up to you .

Filter Max 3 will work as the pre filter . Amazon carriers it .
