Pet Supplies Plus has them for $1 per gallon but I keep hearing certain brands are bad etc. Looking at buying a 20g long.

Aqueon tanks are probably the best of the big box brands. My aqueon tanks have been awesome.

I agree. These are the better of the two big mass produced glass-tank brands. Well worth the $1 per gallon.
As far as I know there are only two big boys in the US. All Glass/Aqueon and Marineland/Perfecto/Tetra. Places like Petsmart and walmart source their store brand tanks from one of those two manufactures.
There are, of course, a lot of specialty tank manufacturers who make nicer stuff.

Aqueon is high quality
I have a 38 gallon tank & stand (Oak finish) purchased at Petsmart in 2010. Very high quality. Just as important, their stands are very sturdy albeit a bit pricey. Quality is worth it since mine is a "showpiece" in my living room.
