I'm going to be making a 20 gallon sump for my 56 gallon tank. What I don't understand is when there is a power outage, is there a way to keep water from my tank from being siphoned into the sump automatically? I will not be drilling my tank as its been established now for two years. Trying to evaluate all my options before I start the build.

The overflow box prevents your tank from flooding your sump

Correct, a properly setup overflow box will prevent the flood. Some water will go down into the sump, so you have to be prepared for that, but your entire tank wouldn't empty unless you have the syphone tube at the bottom of your tank.
