Try it on a spare piece of styro to know for sure. There are more paints that won;t work on styro than will so better safe than sorry. If it doesn't melt the spare piece, it's okay to use

Well the 'styrofoam' came today and well.. it's polystyrene...

Is it meant to be so brittle?

It literally feels like it could shatter if you looked at it wrong..

I was expecting some sort of foam sheeting.

Styro is stiff, and acrylic paint should be fine.
