Red Sea or Azoo (same filter) make a very small HOB filter that HAS adjustable flow. I've used one on a 2.5g for a Betta. Swap out the light for a CFL that is near 6500K if you can. That will grow plants. Otherwise try Java Fern tied to wood or rock. My Betta loved his bridge as a hiding/sleeping place.

Even with a filter I do PWCs weekly.

My current Betta in a 10 g all live plants

I'll have to look in to those bulb, are those something I have to get at a LFS or can I find them at walmart?

Those were the two filters I was looking at, I agree about the water changes weekly still. Also love your Betta, very pretty fish.

The 2.5 is big enough might sound small but its not.
I use a 2.5 as a sump for my betta drip system and it work fine.

Here something I made
DIY BI filter - YouTube
Even for a 10 gallon it work great.

I got mine at Petsmart. I didn't see any at Walmart. BUT you can certainly check. I'm not sure how large a bulb yours will accept.
I used 10w screw in u-shaped CFLs rather than the spiral ones. Mine are by Marineland and Aqueon.

But I'm even growing plants with an LED fixture and one tank has Ambient light plus a table lamp close to tank. That one grows Moss and Anubias just fine.

Thank You, my Betta did not show his true potential till I got a real light on him. Then his color came alive !

I've found the U shaped screw in CFLs (lights of america brand) in walmart's fish section, they were around $5 each.
