Want to switch from a biowheel to a external pump and filter vry soon. New salt tank 30 gal only live rock. I have had it cycling for 10 days. Is it bad for the tank to do this?

Do you mean you want to add a sump? If so this is perfect for a reef. Natural filtration is ideal in the modern reef aquarium, and a sump will allow you to do just that. Use it for a refugium and a place to hide your other equipment and the tank will do better. HOBs, canister, and bio-balls just trap debris can create nitrate and phosphate, the last things a reef needs.
