Question Blocking large holes in bubble stone?

I have a fairly long bubble stone and on the far end (away from the tube) there are a few large holes letting out most of the air. If I block these with my fingers the rest of the little holes start working much better. Is there a safe (for the fish) way to permanently block these holes?
