hey all,

i was wondering what you would you suggest for a 55g tank. What pieces are optional and mandatory. What brands would you suggest for each?

Also, are powerheads simply to produce a current and to keep water flowing? Wouldyou suggest getting one for a 55g?

What are air pumps really needed for?

Thanks in advance,
Dan

You will find most use a combo of 2 filters for this and larger tanks. A hang on back (HOB) power filter and a canister type.
Powerheads are mainly used with under gravel filters.
The goal is to get a balance of mechanical and biological filtration. Flow rate of the filters combined should be a water turnover 4 to 8 times per hour or 220 to 440 gal per hour for the 55 gal tank.
With proper filtering a air pump is really not needed.
Good info on filters in general here. http://www.2cah.com/netmax/basics/filters/filters.shtml
