Canister question

Have a tetratec ex 700 external filter for my 30g tank which I've had set up for about 6 months nowand my water parameters are fine, my question is do I realy need all the pads that are in there?

From top to bottom they go like this filter floss pad, carbon filter media,biological filter foam(bf) x3, bio filter balls, bf x1 and ceramic filter rings

If anything my trates are up a little and got a little of the red slime on my substrate, any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi the only thing that I have in my canister live rock rubble.

I'd toss the carbon and move the foam between the bio balls & ceramic noodles. A PWC will lower the nitrates.
