Change out Filter

My filter is very dirty however I'm afraid to change it out, since filter carry's good bacteria any suggestions?

If it's not falling apart, just swish the cartridge in used tank water to get the gunk off. When it gets really ragged, if you can add a new one, add it and keep the old one there too for a week or two. This is a case where too clean is bad.
