Is activated charcoal worth the effort? Would it cut down on the water changes?

Nope ... PWC's necessary carbon or not. Carbon is best for removing Meds from water ... after that it becomes part of the Bio-Filter. Most members don't even use it ... unless to remove meds or even tannins if you put a DW that really leaches tons of Tannins.
