I am setting up a 125gal with 3x175w MH mogul base lights. If I want to keep clams will they do good right on the bottom, on the sand bed. Or will I need to keep them closer to the light sorce up on some LR?
Can they move on their own? will they find their own spot?

I keep mine on the sand bed in my 120, and they are doing fine. They will eventually find a place they like and attach to it.

It really depends on the species you plan to get. Some prefer the substrate while other, like the popular crocea, actually prefer the rock work. Placing a clam under 175s should be no problem if it is set in the rock work.
