Cleaning Advice and Tips please!

Hello! We did all the research before getting a tank and starting but since getting our cichlids in it cleaning has become a problem. We use a siphon which does pick up some dirt but not very much an we end up with the water level going too low an still having a tank full of poo! Lol. My other half tries to get some out with a net but we don't want to end up loosing too much sand. We already tried cutting the tube on the siphon so the dirt doesn't need to travel too far up but lots of it is still to heavy!?
Had anyone got any advice or tips how to clear it all up? Our tank is on quite a low stand - does this make a difference?

The stand height does make a difference. The bigger the drop, the stronger the syphon.

And the bigger the I.D. of the hose the stronger the syphon as well. Yes it'll drain the tank quicker but it'll pick up the waste quicker too.
