Well, I finally got around to thoroughly cleaning my Eheim 2217 canister; it has been nearly a year and I felt guilty. Still, the flow was never really slow, the water was clear, and the actual cleaning went well. A helpful video on YouTube was useful. As it turned out, I replaced the white pad, wrung out the coarse blue pad, and rinsed everything else in tank water. Gently cleaned the impeller, lubed o-ring, and I was done in less than an hour. I did have to tilt the canister a few times to get it properly filled, but that was easy. Just wanted to let people know that these cannisters are far easier maintenance than one might think at first glance. Merry Christmas everyone!
