cleaning the sump?

Hey guys, I was wondering if I should clean the sump at all? I clean the protein scimmer once ins a while and try ti wipe the dirt I see. Of cords I change the filter pad every time I do a water change. But I start swing linked a little bit of sand and shells. Do you guys turn off all the pumps and skimmers and give it a good cleaning. I don't think the sand will hold nitrates ....

i asked the same question a few months ago and was told to pretty much leave it alone. LOL It's supposed to be kinda dirty from what people told me.

I clean mine once a month. Gets the extra junk out that could cause nitrates.
