My Fluval U2 filter stopped running recently and when I opened it up , the insides and the impeller shaft was covered completely with a very thick crust of mineral deposits. I couldn't get in to clean it well with vinegar, so I had to soak it in CLR. All the parts work like new now, so is there a way to make the filter useable again?

To make is safe again I would try and wipe it down with soap and water really good, rinse it and then run it in the bathtub for a little while.

I'm not so sure about soap. I would run some bleach through it to clean, let it dry out, then some plain water to rinse it out.
