Components of a shut off valve

I am trying to wrap my head around what components do specific tasks within the shutoff system. Auto shutoff pressure valves come with kits as well as the actual float switch. What I'm trying to think through is what does the shutoff pressure valve DO? Why can I not simply have the float? I'm guessing the float alone does nothing? Can someone please tell me which component does what in the order of events causing the actual shut off of water? Thanks

After some googling is the auto shutoff pressure valve that comes with most RO shutoff kits the same as a water pressure regulator? Basically it keeps the water coming into the line from being excessive?
