What is the correct size filter for a 55g? It's cycling now & will be a cichlid tank. I'm using a new Emperor 400 gph (biowheel) filter.

To be honest, I've not been able to id the cichlids yet. I inherited both of them. One is about 2" long with a mostly orange-red lower body, black stripe in the middle with lots of pretty blue mixed in especially on the dorsal fin. The other is larger... a little over 4" with solid black body with slightly less-black (barely discernable) stripes and no other significant markings. Sorry, no pictures yet.

I reccomend you get another filter, cichlids can be very messy and need lots of filtration. Try another Emp400 or an AC300. If possible get a canister filter. A fluval 304 or 404 would work. And I think your first fish is a firemouth, does it look like this?:

Not sure on the second fish, a pic would help.

I would also reccomend the Fluval 404 it is what I used on my 55gal Oscar tank.
They do a wonderful job and cleaning is a breeze.
They also hold alot of filter media.
