Emperor HOB media suggestions?

I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for different filter medias to use in an emperor 400 hang on back filter. I have read that many suggest not to use activated carbon (which the stock filter pads come equipped with) in a planted tank. Does anyone know of perhaps an alternative media for the media cartridges? Or perhaps suggest i remove the carbon from the "stock" filter pads prior or shortly after use?

With the Emperors comes two spare plastic cartridges. I just load these with aquarium filter floss. Works well for me. In any event after a couple of weeks or so, the carbon in the stock pads will become inert and you can just keep rinsing them in old aquarium water. Be careful of taking them apart as it can be a bit messy. Jeff
