You can rinse off the media in your water from pwc. You do this till they are falling apart. The company says change it monthly to get money out of you.
 
I have to agree. Depedning on what media you are changing out you pretty much use it til it falls apart.

If you have a carbon bag type like in an aquaclear that would be changed every couple weeks if you choose to run it.

The beneficial bacteria that keep your tank healthy live on those filter cartridges.
 
I have many a tank. LOL see my signature.

i run aquaclears and fluvals on my freshwater tanks and I like to run carbon about every other month. Otherwise just a rinse and back in they go.
 
In my fluval FX5 I have polishing pads, carbon and biomedia nuggets.
In my fluval 305 i use polishing pads and carbon and the same biomedia, but I have this fluval running on a saltwater tank
 
Yeah I was in a rush didn't change the biomedia but I changed my bags and did change pads so now I know not to touch them thanks
