Filter problems

1. Not enough reach, my filter is on my left corner wall and it's not filtering the right
2. Can I take the safety thing off? Idk what it's called but it's this sry water quality is terrible I am moving stuff around and as you can see the large stuff is still on so can I take it off

if you removed the strainer , I would be afraid any small fish would get sucked in ,
have you thought about moving the filter more towards the center of the tank ,
that would give it a better chance of catching junk from both sides
I had a filter like that I never liked , I traded it out for a marineland / penguin 200 biowheel filter , seems to have better suction and filters better
