Fish trapped in Aqua Tech 5-15 Filter

I have the Walmart Aqua Tech 5-15 filter on my 10 gallon tanks. For the past three mornings I have found one of my zebra danios in the filter in front of the filter medias. (all have survived the trauma of this ) This would suggest they were not sucked into the intake valve, but rather have jumped up over the return cascade flow into the filter. This seems unlikely to me, but I cannot think of any other possibility.

Has anyone else faced this? Any suggestions for a solution?

If all the intake guards are still attached (I broke a few) I doubt they would be able to fit through the intake. So, I would think you are right, they are jumping up and into it. You could get some screen or mesh and cover the opening.
