Fix the old or in with the new?

My neighbor moved away from his tank and I took his protein skimmer which replaced my current, tiny skimmer. The protein skimmer, ASM mini G, I believe, worked great up until recently when the pump crapped out. A replacement pump is $50 but a new skimmer that works better could be an option. The thing is I would have to wait until Christmas time to ask for the new one. What should I do, New skimmer or fix the ASM?

I think having a working skimmer now and until whenever is better then a better one 6 months from now.
