If a fluorescent lighting assembly turns off, is there a fix to this? I have a large brick-like device (assuming its an inline ballast) gets really hot and causes the light to go off. Can this be replaced or do I need a new kit?

Yes, a ballast can easily be replaced. If it's a standard fluorescent ballast you can get a replacement at Lowes or HomeDepot.
Did you try different/new bulbs?

Yes, I tried a different bulb. Same thing. It shuts off after 5 min. The ballast is real hot, and I can smell burning. I saw the replacement ones at HD but I need to check the correct voltage. The ones I saw at HD were 3 wires, one was ground so I need to match those up as well.

As long as it's a regular output fluorescent you should be able to find 1 at HD or Lowes, but they do not carry High Output (HO) ballasts.
