Fluval hose

Has anyone tried an alternative to the the hose that comes with the fluval? I have a 405 and was think about looking at a Home Depot for some tubing or hose. I would like to get it there cause its A: cheaper B: I can get it at any length. So if anyone has tried it with success let me know.

I used it on my return side for my inline heater with my 406. Didn't trust the ribbed hose on the barbs by themselves. I replaced it all with vinyl and used some hose clamps. Been almost over a year with no issues.

Edit: it was 5/8" vinyl that i used
