foam filters

I have two foam filters in my tank both are the prefilters to my mag drive pumps, one for the return and one for the skimmer. Are the foam filters really neccesary or should I take them off. I have heard that they are not good as they strain out to much of the natural plankton in the tank.

By using them you would have less maintenance. It helps catch the debris and keeps your pump from clogging. However, what type of skimmer do you have? Some skimmers work better with the foam such as a Reef Devil.
