I have a 55 gallon glass tank and am wondering if I can take the tank to the lsf and get the a hole cut in the tank to be able to use a wet dry trickle filter system? I have seen my brother and laws tank and he has a little like rectangle box the whole height of his tank. a hole is in the bootom of his tank with what looks like maybe a one inch tube that goes to the filter system under the cabinet.

That would be a standard overflow, which you can build yourself of glass. Be careful in drilling tank bottoms since they must be non-tempered. Perform a search on internal and external overflows for a whole new outlook on overflow systems :)

Edit** Not speaking of HOB (I distrust these).

When I had my 55 I used a HOB overflow that James was talking about. I used plastic tubing to run it down to the wetdry behind the tank to the bottom.
