glass tops

For those of you with glass tops..

How many times have you broken them and how does salt creep get on TOP of the glass

Fun questions.

I have two 24" of glass top. The first one broke the day I received it in the mail because I pressed on the handle too hard.

The second one broke today when I stepped on it. Only little pieces off corners so I have scotch tape on there now.

I feel the day is soon when I'll have to get some more.

I've never broken one of ours. All but 2 of our tanks have them. I have however had one break for no reason, it was just sitting there on the tank. I contacted the place I'd ordered it from (we had only had it 2 days) and they sent us a full set up as a replacement.

As for salt creep, now mind you I only run FW and BW tanks, I just wipe my BW daily with a white vinegar/water mix.

I stepped on a 36" one once. I find them cheaply made and sharp BUT I have them on all my tanks except for the 55g reef. lol

Cheap enough to replace, although the set for the 125g was $59!

I have a mix of many different saltwater fish amongst my tanks, but I love my Tangs most of all.

Not a bad idea. Might save me from having to take them off for cleaning and breaking them in the process.

Do you have any PH issues with your tops. I dont use one because they sometimes cause lower PH due to poor gas exchange at the surface.

Nope, my pH has always been at 8.2 (and by always, I mean like a month and a half lol). I have some pH buffer I picked up just in case but haven't needed it yet.

It might help that I have the back plastic strip cut off for the filter and heater so one of the 24" tops really only has a small portion of the back strip.

I don't use the back plastic strips on my glass tops. I don't really have any jumpers lol

I only have one for my 5 gallon cycling nano. The first top broke when I stepped on it -__-. I bought a new one though, they really stop evaporation.
