I made sure it was completely dry, then got normal selotape wrapped round the split a few times then got some brown parcel tape to go over the top of that a few times. Hope it works for you.

Make sure it is assembled correctly. If that blue part is on backwards it won't work, as there is prob a one way valve in there.

Also, the large part may need to be on the other end of the hose. Try until it works, after all you need to create a syphon. The split has to be taken care of first though.

I saw those at the dollar store the other day. To me the hose is too small in diameter.

Not sure what you mean ... What do you mean by the large part, the part that sucks up the water? I havent touched or done anything to it, I bought it just the way you see it in the picture.

The diameter wasn't really a problem to me, it's not that small after all! Maybe you saw a different type ???

I have got the same one, but i found removing the funnel off the long tube to be more affective when cleaning gravel/substrate But just be careful not to suck your fish up the pipe

Hum... I thought that perhaps it had come dissasembled and you had just put it together incorrectly. It must just not be able to create a proper syphon if air can get in anywhere on the hose.

the one i got (which is the same) come dissasembled and you can add or remove parts to make it how you need it, your right about the check valve in the pump, it has one so it must be used the right way.

Right, and from what I can see it looks as if the gravel cleaning part of the hose is on the wrong end of the flexible tubing. The bulb for manually pumping and starting the syphon is usually much closer to the gravel cleaner piece. This one is almost to where you would put the hose in the bucket. I would try disconnecting the wide cleaning part and attaching it to the other end. Good luck!
