It depends what you want to do. When I got my first goldies, I priced out the things separately and it wasn't $ per gallon sale time. The 29 kit was much less than buying everything piecemeal. I did have to add another filter as goldies need 10 X, but the tank is still with me and I use it for quarantee.

Thing is I'm trading a guy my old ipod for a 55g tank. It has no lighting, filtration, hood, etc.... My philosophy is why not have a 55g lying around. All I have to do now is save up some money.
