Exclamation How to maintain a Protein Skimmer?

Hello ive posted this before but I never received an answer. I have a 40 gallon tank with a HOB octopus skimmer. It works great and ive had it for 6 months or so. What do you need to do to maintain a skimmer? I heard that you need to run it in vinegar. Is that true?

Thanks

na..not necessary. you could take apart the pump and clean the impeller and housing, and clean out the air line (i run hot water through it to dissolve any salt buildup that may have accumulated), to make sure it's clear. i do that every 3 months or so, and once a week i rinse all the gunk off of the collection cup and neck. that should be all you need to do.

I dont use hot water, I just suck on the tube a few times. What can I say, salt runs in my veins.

Clean the cup, and I'm done

When you say put hot water in the air line, do you mean pour hot water down this?

I bring it to the sink and run hot tap water through it to get all the creep out of it. Then I blow on it to get all the drops of water out and then put it back and try not to get any saltwater in it.
