Hydrometer problems.

When i put my hydrometer in my puffers tank and hold it there it reads 1.008, but when i take it out of the water and rest it on a flat surface it reads 1.004. Why?

Its just miscalibrated sadly a common problem with scientific equipment. If its an advanced one or a expensive one, I have heard some aquarium stores will recalibrate equipment.

Depending on how your hydrometer works, it may still be usable as is, just use a new zero, but I couldn't tell you.

Is it a swing arm hydrometer? Do you rinse it in freshwater after every use?

Yeah it's a swing arm. I rinse it before and after every use.
