I assume this is protein... on top of my water I noticed an oil or soap slick. Thin layer of something chemically.

I have not used any soap or oil around my tank!

It's either something that came off my skin as I stuck my arm in and worked on the tank, or something else.

1. Is this typical?
2. What can I do to get rid of the slick?

Increasing surface agitation will usually cure it.

Yeah, point a power head twards the surface, it will take care of it. That happens when the water becomes stagnant.

My powerhead hits the front wall and makes ripples all over the top water. It doesn't boil the water like bubbles... is this a problem?

nope sounds like its just right.

I have one pointed towards the top and it just ripples a bit to keep the water moving around.
