Is my UV sterilizer working?

I bought a Coralife 3x a couple years ago. The bulb still works but do they lose their effectiveness over time? Do I need to use the genuine Coralife bulb or do the generics work?

I'd check with the bulb's manufacturer but the last time I was using UV bulbs, it was recommended to change them every 12 months of "normal" usage (approx 8000 hours of use) as they do lose effectiveness over time. They will still shine but not at the same wavelength to effectively kill.
