Curious why you think a controller would help in this instance....Did it actually overflow the sump?
 
It's a HOB skimmer. I'm going to put a micro float valve in the collection cup (or more likely, in the overflow bucket), and connect it to an Apex breakout panel that will kill power to the skimmer when it's tripped.
 
I've seen it done on other tanks. With 5 gallons of skimmate, it'll be emptied...she won't put up with that smell for long :)
