Jumped the gun?

Hey guys, I did a bit of an impulse buy last week, and bought a canister filter from eBay, it arrived today, and first impressions are, well; cheap.

I bought the AquaOne Nautilus 1400 Canister Filter

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this filter.
Should I try and see if I can trade it with a better one? (Y'know before I dunk any water in it, rip off all the packaging etc.)

Does it filter correctly/Efficiently? Is it fairly quiet?

Also, I have no idea about biomedia? or the filtration used etc, are these things where quality counts? Or are they the same across the board?

Sorry for being a bit newb, got to start learning somewhere!
