Hi there! I'm new to the world of aquariums and even more new to the world of aquariumadvice.com. So I apologize if I'm in the wrong sub forum or anything.

I just got 3 gallons of lava rocks from someone on a buy/sell site. I have a 25 gallon fish tank and 4 fish that were given to me. I have done some research about lava rocks and have learned that there is special testing that lava rocks get for putting in fish tanks.

So my question is, is there a way to clean/test the rocks myself. I would really like to put them in the tank as I think they look soooooo cool.

Tia :)

Hi, welcome to the forum :)

The only main test I know of is putting some vinegar on to see if the rocks fizz which would indicate carbonates. That's not always a bad thing, depending on the fish you are keeping?

Mainly I would check that the rocks have never been sprayed with any pesticides, etc.
