Are LED lights suitable for freshwater aquariums? Also, what about the Agro-Lite bulbs that are supposed to stimulate plant growth? Do they work? Do they also stimulate algae growth? I am buying a large acrylic tank and of course I want to keep algae to the absolute minimum, since scraping will scratch acrylic.

Are you planning to keep live plants? If so, I'm not sure LEDs are for you. Maybe in a few years, but not yet. If you're just keeping fish, go for the LEDs if you're willing to shell out the cash. LED fixtures are still expensive, but they've been getting cheaper recently.

LEDs are absolutely doable on a planted tank. Ecoxotic makes several configurations in the 6700K area. They are still a bit pricey compared to other lighting types though.
