Hopefully MR. X will chime in. Ordering 3 of the 120w eBay fixtures for my 125. You recommend them so highly I might as well try them out. Here's my question. I'm building a custom canopy with an open/egg crate top. How high above the water level should these lights be?
 
I would have them at least 8" off of the water. You are going to want to put your hands in the tank regularly. If they are less than 8" or so, you are going to have some trouble. Not to mention the fact that salt water and electrical appliances don't mix. You will be splashing on occasion, as will some of the fish.
Anywhere from 8 to 12 inches would be ok IMO.
