I am assuming you are doing saltwater, due to desire for live coral. I am in the process of moving from a 75 gallon to a 125 gallon tank; both are and will be freshwater. I am building the new tank for plants, so lighting is a big issue. My research has revealed plants need a minimum of 2 watts per gallon to up 5 watts per gallon for the most exotic plants. I will be running 3 watts for the 125 gallon, which will be 384 watts. 3 watts per gallon on a 55 would be 165 watts. Hopefully some saltwater guys will write in here for coral recommendations. If it is any help, I will be purchasing a Lunar Aqualight for the 125, and will also be using a CO2 system - again, I am going to be a planted freshwater tank with community fish.

Good luck,

If it helps any, I go with 7 wpg now.. I have 4 X 96W PC's on my 55g Reef. Plenty of light even for SPS toward the top.. I am going to a 75G very soon and will be implementing 2 X 175 MH in the setup as well. With MH, I wouldn't say the wattage matters as much as intensity...

I would say to answer your question, my personal opinion would be no less than 7wpg if going with PC's.
