I was wondering do I have to keep the light on all the time over the tank or can I shut it off at night?

Shut it off at night, if the tank doesn't have live plants in it, you can keep the light off any time the fish aren't being viewed.

Lighting Question
Good morning mf...
I believe the standard way of lighting an aqaurium is to put the light on a timer. The lights on my tanks are on timers set for 12 hours on and 12 off. This arrangement gives the tropical fish a habitat similar to their natural one.
