Yes, I would agree with glmclell and I could not imagine using my canister filter to maintain my gravel. It is so much easier to use a python than to take down the canister, which can go a relatively long time (3 mos for me) without service. I do 20% water changes with minor gravel vac (due to the growing, spreading plants) every 3-4 days, and I think water changes are the single best thing you can do for your tank.
