I went out and bought one yesterday. It's pretty alright. What are peoples thoughts about it?

Get a couple media cages and make your own cartridges. The stock Marineland cartridges plug up quickly and they don't rinse out very well. Otherwise it's a good filter if you keep sand out of it.

It has two slots for filters so I jammed my old filter media in the second slots.

I have 3 Marineland Penguin Filters (1 250 bio-wheel on my 29 gallon tank and 2 350's on my 60 gallon tank). I really like them. I'm still using the media cartridges that cam with them, but I plan on changing them as BigJim indicated.

I'm planning on going from large gravel to sand. Anything I can do to to prevent sand getting into the filter?

Use the short intake tube. A media bag or a piece of pantyhose over the intake will help also.
